Thus a student who is weak in English will be able to work completely independently, receiving instant assistance for any unfamiliar English word or idiom.

Words that were clicked and their translations are added to a list for more concentrated study later .

Pronunciation practice is available in the second language  module, which gives an opportunity for a student to record the pronunciation of an English word, and then hear her pronunciation followed by the computer’s pronunciation.  The student can then try the recording again,  attempting to duplicate the sound of the word provided by the computer. 

Lessons can be created specifically for learning the English language, or the text material can be for a content subject.  Thus in high school for example, a geography lesson in English can have a Spanish translation provided which would eliminate the learning disadvantage of not having English as a first language.  Although the primary purpose would be to teach geography, the Teaching-Engine geography lesson would  coincidentally be teaching English to the student.

Although it may take some commitment to create these lessons, the value and usefulness to a student, make the effort very worthwhile.  Students who otherwise are at a serious learning disadvantage  because of an English language weakness, can essentially be put on a learning par through the second language capabilities of the Teaching-Engine.  Once a lesson is created, it can be copied and distributed via normal computer means such as floppy disks, flash drives, CD’s, up and downloaded from a website or attached to an e-mail.  Lessons created for use at school, can be copied and taken home for practice on a home PC which has the home version of the Teaching-Engine.

For school systems which might have a significant number of non-English speaking students, contracting a bi-lingual person to create these lessons might prove to be a very effective and economical way of solving the language problem.  Because lessons can be created  for any subject and at any level, all students who are not fluent in English from Grade 1 to high school, can be substantially helped with their education through computer assisted learning with the Teaching-Engine program.

By using computers and the Teaching-Engine program, one bi-lingual teacher at a school can multiply his or her effectiveness many times over, simply by creating bi-lingual lessons.  Then, many students can experience the teaching and English translation features on a computer and no longer feel disadvantaged by an English language weakness.

The Teaching-Engine is essentially a universal language trainer.  Any language which can be represented  using a computer keyboard can be used in the program.  This is true for the text reading, graphic reading, reading comprehension and even the math tables.   The words used in any of these modules can have sound associated with them which can be recorded by any person.  Therefore, the pronunciation can be exactly as is heard locally.

If a lesson is created in English,  a person who does not have English as a first language can click any word and hear the pronunciation in local English.  In the reading modules, a definition of the word can be included by the tutor so when a student  right clicks a word, a window appears with the definition.  The definition can be sounded by clicking an icon.  Furthermore, a sound description in another language can also be provided.   This would allow a student who does not have strong English to hear the definition in his own language.   Pronunciation practice is available in the reading modules, which gives an opportunity for a student to record a pronunciation of an English word, and then hear her pronunciation followed by the computer’s pronunciation.  The student can then try the recording again,  attempting to duplicate the sound of the word provided by the computer.  All of these tools provide an opportunity to create reading lessons in English with the English pronunciations, and supported by definitions in English and aural notations in another language.

The second language module is more specifically designed to facilitate the teaching of a second language such as English.  Here, text in the language to be learned is placed in the lesson, and a sentence by sentence translation in the student’s home language is also created by a bi-lingual Tutor.  The sounds for all words in both languages are recorded by one or two persons.   Words within the equivalent (paired) sentences which can be directly translated are linked by the Tutor.  Idioms within the paired sentences can also be linked which means that one or more words in one language can be linked to one or more words in the other language even though the words may be separated within a sentence.

When a student  attempts to read an English sentence, she can click an English word she is not familiar with, and it will be first sounded and highlighted in English.  Because of the linking provided by the Tutor, the equivalent word or idiom in the home language will next be sounded and highlighted, providing an instant translation.
